Alsace - 2009
2009 is a great Alsace vintage and one which, in particular, allowed the great vineyards to shine. The wines are wonderfully expressive, concentrated with good minerality, focus and length of flavour. For the most part, they are also perfectly good to drink young though the best will keep and develop well over many years. All grapes flourished; in particular, 2009 is the finest pinot noir vintage since 2003 and possibly since 1990.
Unlike many fine vintages in Alsace, 2009 was not picked especially early. Winter had been cold and spring had come with a real mix of conditions. For Marc Hugel what was crucial was June, which was warm and very dry. Later came more heat, yet night temperatures were cool so the grapes kept their fruit. The weather remained perfect right through to the end of the vintage allowing growers to harvest in optimum conditions.
