Rioja - 2006
With the lowest yields since 2001, the 2006 vintage in Rioja was one of two extremes, both of which benefited the wines (provided the producers took sufficient care in the vineyard). With a wet winter enabling a large amount of leaf canopy, work was needed to control the risk of mildew. By contrast, August saw drought conditions in the region. The grapes were picked in generally fine condition, and the best wines are marked out by a combination of freshness and fruit purity. These light, fragrant wines will drink very well young.
