Rhone (South) - 2008
Rain, mildew and rot were formidable opponents for vignerons in 2008, but redemption came during September when the Mistral began to sweep down the valley, bringing with it blue skies and glorious sunshine.
For those growers who faced the challenges and conquered them, 2008 is a very good vintage in the south, with echoes of 1999. The challenging conditions meant that only the most conscientious growers, who carefully manage their vineyards and whose yields were low, produced the healthy and ripe grapes necessary for successful, balanced wines in 2008. Round, fleshy and with soft and ripe tannins, these wines are best enjoyed young.
