Alsace - 2008

A very good vintage in Alsace. By and large 2008 saw small quantities of excellent, classically-styled wines. A cool April was followed by warm, dry conditions enabling a leisurely and slightly early flowering period. An unpredictable summer was rescued by cool August weather, promoting excellent acidity in the grapes, and most producers enjoyed a sunny harvest of low yields. An Indian summer in October was good news for vendanges tardives and sélection de grains nobles wines, which are well worth looking out for.

Trenchant, bone-dry riesling of great character and persistance. The Pfersigberg is another great vineyard outside the medieval village of Eguisheim and has a special affinity with riesling.

Olivier Humbrecht made good quantities of sweet wine in the 2008 harvest and that is reflected in the price. This botrytis-affected Alsace pudding wine is delicious in an exuberant, fruity style; sweet but not cloying.
