St-Emilion and Pomerol, home to prestigious châteaux such as Cheval Blanc and La Fleur Pétrus, are well known for making some of the world’s greatest wines, but the best are never cheap. Their satellite villages, on the other hand, can offer real bargains. Lalande-de-Pomerol offers wines similar in style to Pomerol (rich, almost fleshy wines with velvety flavour), albeit with a little less finesse, but are much less expensive.
