Burgundy (Cote d'Or) - 2008
2008 is a very good vintage for white Burgundy. Three weeks of excellent weather immediately prior to and at harvest produced concentrated wines with a beautiful balance of freshness and power. What is striking about the 2008s is their wonderful and most unusual density of texture, particularly in the top appellations of the Côte d’Or. The wines are ripe but not overly so, more mineral than fruity, and have similar acidity to the very fresh 2007s, but this is hidden underneath a caressing ‘velvety’ texture. This is a word used more frequently of red wines but is the best I have to describe the attractive yet unusual way the wines are perceived in the mouth.
The wines are immediately delicious, very approachable and easy to like, and conceal their considerable structure of dry extract and acidity beneath a gentle density of flavour that coats the mouth without cloying the palate. They are precociously enjoyable, yet the best will keep well.
