Marguet Rosé Grand Cru, Non-Vintage, Brut
"A lovely champagne, and much appreciated in this house. However we have noticed with recent bottles a tendency to fade rapidly in the glass."

The Society's Corsican Rosé
"From Marcel Orford-Williams, Society Buyer. Corsican production is quite small and most of it is sold and consumed on the spot. Production is dominated by coops and prices are not especially high. We have a decent nielluccio in the list and will have a rosé in next list. Corsican wines cannot be that cheap as shipping costs are considerable. By and large the wines do not compete favourably with say Languedoc or Italy. I’m of the opinion therefore that one might as well buy from top estates even though availability is almost non-existent and prices are higher but quality on the other hand is very good. Another problem with Corsica is the grape varieties planted. Much of the island was planted with so called international varieties, often in inappropriate places. There is chardonnay, cabernet, merlot for example which are really of little interest. Better I feel to promote indigenous varieties, some unique to Corsica and that means working with the top estates, many of whom are currently engaged in rediscovering some of Corsica’s lost varieties. I think that is where the cutting edge is.

Undurraga TH Alto Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
"Somewhat disappointing on the nose. Slightly more acidity than I was expecting but for all of that, a fantastic wine. Fresh, soft tannins and a great balance of fruit with vanilla overtones. None of the bitterness that is so common to Chilean Cab."

Chardonnay, Domaine de Gournier, Cévennes, 2011
"Very rich and full but a little lifeless and possibly a little tainted! Not unpleasant but equally, not exciting. There are better on the list."

Adega de Monção, Vinho Verde, 2011
"This wine combines the green fruit of greengages and slight spritz. Light and refreshing. My view is better chilled and perhaps a summer aperitif would work better but with fish it has potential. Drinking in the garden as the sun goes down in June it is superb.
