Germany - 2008

A very good vintage, particularly for those who enjoy their German whites in a steely and sleek style. These elegant wines are the result of an early flowering period (the second in as many vintages) and a consistent summer. Few winemakers were troubled by rot or diseases in spite of some heavy rainfall. The ripening process was favourable but not generous, and a cool September inhibited botrytis, meaning that few grapes attained levels of sweetness over those of Spätlese. These wines and those from the drier Kabinett level are the ones to follow.
