Grenouillère, Vin de Pays de Vendée, 2009 (J Mourat Père et Fils)

Grenouillère, Vin de Pays de Vendée, 2009 (J Mourat Père et Fils)

When it comes to wild bunches, a vin de pays appellation is a promising sign of a free thinking grower who likes to push boundaries. The negrette grape is more widely found in the Frontonnais, just north of Toulouse, than in the south-western Loire, but the Mourat family vines, aged between 80 and 105 years, are no upstarts. This dark, juicy, quietly seductive red was a wow factor for buyer Joanna Locke MW when she visited the property recently.

"How to describe this wine - a blast of ripe loganberry with an ever so slightly leafy, herbaceous undertow, tannins present but not highly assertive. Stylistically this seemed to sit somewhere between a Loire Cabernet Franc and a decent nothern Rhone Syrah - quite delicious."

Mr Richard Holmes (04-Apr-2013)

"Lovely dark colour but not a heavy wine, fruity and a little bit grassy. Worth trying if you like something different. I enjoyed it at cellar temperature and will buy again."

Mr Alexander Parker (22-Feb-2013)
