Rhone (North) - 2006
The deeply coloured, sleek, sensual syrahs of the northern Rhône are going to give a huge amount of pleasure and will be ready sooner than the weightier 2005s. All appellations were successful. Michel Chapoutier claims to have made his best ever vintage in Hermitage in 2006. For earlier drinking, Saint-Josephs are on a similar level to 2005. Wines from Crozes-Hermitage, on the other hand, are more attractive in the round tannin frame of 2006. 2006 was a great Rhône vintage. Grapes ripened more evenly and produced softer rounder tannins in 2006 than in any vintage since 2000. The vintage was a success across all appellations and the individual characteristics and nuances are clearly and deliciously defined
