Burgundy (Red) - 2010
Equal to 2009 in quality but opposite in style. Low yields and coolish weather produced fresh, perfumed wines with beautiful, silky tannins transparently revealing the character of the vineyards from which they were produced.
I have rarely tasted red Burgundy with such ripe, gentle, sweet and frictionless tannins. The reds are naturally concentrated due to the low yields, down 20–50%, but the wines were harvested at modest alcohols of 12–12.5% (then usually chaptalised to 12.5–13%), and have exquisite pinot perfume.
Almost everything is superb. The crus and communes that can sometimes produce wines with firm tannins, such as Volnay Clos de Chênes, Pommard, Aloxe and Nuits-St-Georges, are ripe and sweet-tasting in 2010. Indeed, never have I tasted so many delicious Nuits-St-Georges. The modest Bourgognes and crus like St Aubin are also excellent. The wines should drink well at all stages of their life due to the quality of their tannins.
