Rhone (South) - 2009

bottles of vintage wine

While 2009 is a fabulous vintage, southern Rhônes were less even than their northern counterparts. The reason was the climate and the lack of water which, during August, was critical enough to shut down the ripening process, especially in the case of the grenache. Patience was needed as well as nerves of steel, for while the grenache remained dormant the combination of sun and wind evaporated water and so concentrated sugars, fooling many growers into picking too early. Rain in mid September – I was there! – provided respite and much needed nourishment for the vines. Picking after these rains gave the best results and produced some really lovely wines. Humble Côtes-du-Rhône are delicious with real vitality, while the top wines will provide decades of drinking pleasure.
