Rhone (North) - 2008

Growing conditions were not easy in 2008. The crop was small and was reduced further by an attack of mildew during flowering. As in 2007, August was cold and September began with storms. Luckily the grapes weren’t yet ripe so the damage was largely limited to dry-stone walls and terraces. The weather then changed mid-September and from then on conditions were perfect. The tiny crop reacted to the appearance of the sun and more than made up for lost time. Grapes were picked in ideal conditions but growers still had to be vigilant in removing rot-affected berries and choosing the right time to pick.
As in 2000 and 2004, 2008 is a vintage for drinking young. The wines are round and fleshy and the tannins are soft and ripe. In many cases, those growers who usually release several cuvées only made one in 2008.
