An extraordinary vintage and for once the concentration and power do not come with very high alcohol. The reds are very black and very concentrated but without heaviness. Indeed the 2010s have on average a half point less alcohol than 2009 or 2007.
The tannins were perfectly formed, polished, sweet and with no hint of dryness or bitterness. Few growers were able to put 2010 into context as it clearly resembles little during the last 20 years, though Jean Abeille of Mont-Redon, a dependable old-timer, suggested a likeness to 1961.This vintage has everything, a sense of well being, power and poise. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is sublime, and special mention must also go to Gigondas and Cairanne, both of which excelled.
