[01] The Society's White Burgundy, Macon-Villages

Description

A Mâcon-Villages put together with fanatical precision by Marcel Orford-Williams and local oenologist Jean-Marc Darbon. Vibrant mid-yellow colour with lemony tinge, fleshy white fruits with briochy/bready aspects, good ripe chardonnay palate with a touch of vineyard origin. A very satisfying wine from southern Burgundy, quite broad with good natural acidity.
This wine finished 1st in The Great Society Wines Vote 2010 .

Members' Reviews

"As always, this is a wonderful wine. I know Macon-Villages, and many of the individual Villages themselves, from several happy trips and I would recommend this wine to anyone."
Mr Michael F Davies (09-Apr-2010)
"I was surprised and disappointed find this a thin wine, with little taste and no length. It lacked the minerality I would expect from a Maconnais wine, even at village level. I've been very impressed by the other Society wines I have tried, and your selections in general."
Mr Andy Cowper (23-Mar-2010)
"I have to say I found this a bit disappointing. It seemed rather dilute and lacking in body. I bought it at the offer price and it wasn't a bargain even at that price. Perhaps a bad batch?"
Bernard T Hawcroft Esq (07-Mar-2010)
"Crisp and dry, excellent!"
Dr John W Finch (19-Nov-2009)
"Burgundy is my first choice and this is consistently an excellent drink at a very affordable price for a burgundy."
Mr John R Nash (18-Nov-2009)
"This is the wine I rely on for non plonk parties eg my mother's 90th. Absolutely straight - whats on the label is in the bottle, unoaked (or just the faintest whiff?) chardonnay. Never fails."
Mr Desmond R R Sutcliffe (18-Nov-2009)
"I have bought the Society Burgundy for some time and the latest one maintains the high quality that is offered and expected from the Wine Society. Thoroughly recommended to those who want a reliable and delicious white Burgundy without fuss. "
Mr J Hurlbatt OBE (18-Nov-2009)
"I am not surprised that this wine is the Society's most popular line. I have bought hundreds of bottles for myself and for my Company and the members always are delighted with it. Delicious fruity unoaked chardonnay - what more to ask? Consistently excellent, year after year. Am I being over-enthusiastic? Perhaps, but it is superb value for money. Well done Toby Morrhall."
Mr Michael G C Gibbs (17-Nov-2009)
"I am very fond of decent Mâcon-Villages and the latest version of the Society's has not disappointed. As the note in the List says, it is full and round, with a crisply flavoursome definite Chardonnay flavour. I find it a perfect pre-dinner drink, especially though not exclusively on a nice Summer evening and it goes well with a fish, seafood or salad starter. It also makes a good party wine of which I think many members would not be ashamed!"
Revd Anthony Birbeck (16-Nov-2009)
"Utterly reliable and remarkable quality for the price. This makes a tremendous "house white" but will also do for more serious occasions if budget dictates."
Mr Peter N Francis (14-Nov-2009)
"Used this wine for many years. I have found it reliable constant. Particularly good with fish but also good with other dishes."
Dr Leslie Rose (14-Nov-2009)
"I have been drinking the Society's White Burgundy for more than 30 years and have never been disappointed in the quality nor the style. There are cheaper versions of White Burgundy but if you are looking for quality and value then the the Society's White Burgundy should always top your list. "
Mr Michael W K Boddy (13-Nov-2009)
"Good value, dependable and very enjoyable."
Mr Martin Lee (13-Nov-2009)
"There is a good reason why this is the Society's best seller - quite simply it is delicious, multi-functional, consistent and still good value. Why make anything else your 'house white'? "
Mr Laurence Hunt (13-Nov-2009)
"Always a favourite, but to be frank, I am finding the 2008 rather acidic. Could perhaps do with waiting, but I have always found it best drunk young and fresh. Excellent value."
Mr William D Christopher (12-Nov-2009)
"Consistent high quality. Wine that can be relied upon."
Mr Gregory D Thacker (12-Nov-2009)
"The Society's White Burgundy represents top quality at an affordable price and together with the Society's Beaujolais Villages is consistently good year after year."
Mr John S Clarke (12-Nov-2009)
"A very drinkable, fresh and fruity white Burgundy wine. Great value."
Dr George Taylor (11-Nov-2009)
"If you want a good burgundy at a reasonable price then this fits the bill."
Mr Nigel Hunter (11-Nov-2009)
"Very good everyday wine at a very reasonable price - excellent stuff."
Mr David Payne (11-Nov-2009)
"It's certainly great value for money and an excellent choice for events like Weddings. Personally for one-off consumption, I prefer a slightly richer style - I recently tasted some 07 Macon-Farges from another supplier, which I slightly preferred for that reason, although it was about £2 pbt more expensive. I personally very much dislike the aesthetics of screw-caps, but I appreciate I'm going against the grain on that one - it's actually quite some time since I experienced corked wine bought privately (as opposed to at a restaurant), so may be the cork "technology" is improving"
Mr Peter Faber (11-Nov-2009)
"Crisp, well defined and a good length. Possibly the best Burgundy for the price that I've drunk. Incidentally I think the label is as good as the wine."
Mr Peter Newell (11-Nov-2009)
"A classic Macon Village at a fair price. Represents a constant standard for everyday drinking."
Mr Nicholas Smith (11-Nov-2009)
"I wish people would serve stuff like this at drinks parties."
Mr Joseph Daley (11-Nov-2009)
"It's my favourite Wine Society wine so I always have it in stock. Even family and friends who claim not to like wine enjoy drinking it. Good value for money year after year."
Miss Helen M Foster (11-Nov-2009)
"The Society's White Burgundy is our mainstay white wine drunk year round, but particularly in summer. The quality is consistent and in terms of value for money we believe it unsurpassable. We believe that it is one of the Society's most popular wines and that is not surprising. It goes very well with light meats, poultry and fish, or just to drink on its own. The Society's Red Burgundy is good too - as a pair they take some beating."
Mr J Duncan Cavanagh (12-Oct-2009)
"An excellent value bottle. Very crisp and clean and tasted more expensive. Several friends commented on it, unprompted, during casual drinks."
Mr John Kimmance (25-Aug-2009)
"An excellent and very reliable wine. I almost invariably serve it at lunch parties because I know I can trust it. It is particularly good with food but I also often serve it to drink on its own. Please keep it coming!"
Mr G B Fawcus (15-Aug-2009)
"Top quality and consistent year after year. Fresh, crisp and rounded - it is ideal for both drinking on its own or with food."
Mr Richard E Webb (14-Aug-2009)
"As usual I am much enjoying my latest case of the above. I feel I am in the best of company as our esteemed senior wine buyer chose this wine to celebrate a daughter`s wedding."
Dr Tom McCubbin (11-Aug-2009)
"Disappointing this year (2009). Thinner, sharper, less complex. I shan't be buying it again."
Stephen B C Scott Esq (09-Aug-2009)
"The Society's White Burgundy is excellent value and drinks better than many white burgundies twice or triple the price."
Mr Angus McNeilage (08-Aug-2009)
"An excellent wine at a bargain price. Will certainly be reordering."
Rodney P England Esq (07-Aug-2009)
"I have drunk the Society's White Burgundy for many years and admire the consistency that is, to me, its trademark. An excellent, very drinkable, white Burgundy that is typical of the region."
Mr Andrew Davies (07-Aug-2009)
"I first bought this wine as part of the BUYER'S FAVOURITE WHITES package. Having tasted it and given it a score of 25 out of 30 points [20 points or above suggest reordering] I ordered another case. It is a light, very pleasant drink, but perhaps lacks a definitive character of its own."
Mr Anthony Castell Parker (06-Aug-2009)
"I have ordered this wine for many years and it is always reliable. I'm nuts about white Burgundy (and red!) and the Society's Macon-Villages is great for a cool glass in the garden of a summer evening and in front of a winter fire...anytime, in fact!"
Paul Young Esq (06-Aug-2009)
"It gives me great pleasure to record that I always have a bottle of this wine in the fridge waiting for me on arriving home - it helps that it has a screwcap. It is an excellent wine, at a bargain price. Thank you!"
Ms Sheila Madgwick (06-Aug-2009)
"This is a light, refreshing wine with the characteristic Chardonnay zip. Perfect for sipping outdoors on a warm summer evening, with canapés."
Mr Michael H Leapman (06-Aug-2009)
"Such a reliable purchase; I have never been let down by the Society's Burgundy and if in doubt or in an emergency will always go to my Eurocave where I keep a supply. It's a lovely full drinkable wine which doesn't blow your head off."
Mr Anthony A Elgar (06-Aug-2009)
"The Society's White Burgundy has been a house staple for many years and whilst we try many other wines as our house white we always come back to the Society's White Burgundy. Whether it's fish and chips on a Friday night, a weekend lunch, or just a class of something cool on the patio when I get home, the Society's White Burgundy does it for the Jones's. I was amused to read in one of the Society's reviews earlier this year that one of your buyers used Society's White Burgundy and the Society's Rioja for his son's wedding, well that struck a familiar note with us as we had done exactly the same last September at our son's wedding, except for the Rioja we used the Vina Amezola. Although there was an open bar, most guests drank the red and Society's White Burgundy throughout the evening - a testament to good wine indeed!"
Mr Ashley W Jones (06-Aug-2009)
"An excellent wine, crisp, smooth and always tempting. Very good value for money and constantly popular with my family!"
Capt C W Pile RN(RTD) (05-Aug-2009)
"The Society's White Burgundy is, and has been, our staple white wine choice for some years. We have tried various alternatives but inevitably return."
Mr William M Waterfall (05-Aug-2009)
"This has been our favourite white wine for many years. It is very consistent and is one of the most delicate tasting. When the price increased this year we tasted many other wines to replace it as our everyday drink but none have yet matched the Society's White Burgundy."
Mr Eric Bolam (05-Aug-2009)
"Still my favourite dry white wine which we buy for both our houses in France and England. Some variations between cases - some flinty dry - some buttery dry (which I prefer). It's now just getting a little too expensive for everyday drinking and we are looking at more reasonable wines for our daily aperitif."
Mr Stuart Ninian (05-Aug-2009)
"I bought the Society's White Burgundy for a reception held on a warm summer's night and found it dry and refreshing with good weight. It is an excellent all-round wine as I would also serve it with light summer food. I regard it as good value. "
Mr Anthony Arfwedson (05-Aug-2009)
"A very dependable white with body and flavour, drinkable with quite a wide range of food or on its own."
John R H Richards Esq (05-Aug-2009)
"This seems a particularly good vintage. As always, it benefits from decanting a few hours before drinking: I pour the bottle into a jug, and then back into the bottle. The consequent exposure to air definitely rounds out the taste."
Mr Roger Mottram (05-Aug-2009)
"Good value, reliable quality, delicious round but dry flavour and helpfully very little oak, we like its dependability as a good every day drinking wine. In what seems to be an increasingly competitive level of sub £10.00, it still outclasses most other similarly priced 'house white' burgundies."
Arundel McDougall Esq (05-Aug-2009)
"I always have this wine in my cellar. Delicious and good value for money."
Mr James G Green (05-Aug-2009)
"Disappointing, not up to the usual standard in my view. Note from The Wine Society: We want all wine purchased from The Society to be enjoyable. If it is not, then we would like to hear about it, and would encourage members to contact Member Services on 01438 741177."
Mr Simon Fosh (05-Aug-2009)
"We have been consistently pleased with both the quality of the wine and it's value for money."
Mark C W Bateman Esq (05-Aug-2009)
"Consistently good wine and very good value for money. There is always a bottle or two in my place."
Mr Michael Smith (05-Aug-2009)
