Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This is the most famous of all the southern Rhône appellations. The characteristic large, smooth pudding stones, or galets, that are a feature of the soils reflect the heat back on the vines and preserve it after nightfall making the vineyards some of the hottest in France. Regional law permits a remarkable 13 grape varieties to be entered into the red blend, though in practise few properties use more than four and five. Grenache is usually the main grape.
