Châteauneuf-du-Pape

This is the most famous of all the southern Rhône appellations. The characteristic large, smooth pudding stones, or galets, that are a feature of the soils reflect the heat back on the vines and preserve it after nightfall making the vineyards some of the hottest in France. Regional law permits a remarkable 13 grape varieties to be entered into the red blend, though in practise few properties use more than four and five. Grenache is usually the main grape. ##

Châteauneuf bottles are embossed with the Papal coat of arms in memory of the period when the popes resided at nearby Avignon. White Châteauneuf is rare, but increasingly good and worth seeking out.
