2014 Awards

National Wine Retailer Of The Year 2014

We are delighted to announce that The Wine Society has won the top award in Decanter magazine's annual wine awards being named been named National Wine Retailer for the fourth year in a row. A panel of expert judges, chaired by Peter Richards MW, unanimously agreed that The Society should once again be awarded this title based on 'the kind of value, service and quality that can be found', which 'convey 'the magic of wine''.

The judges also said that 'The Wine Society's outstanding buying team, competitive everyday pricing, enviable list and excellent service were hard to fault.'

Chief Executive Robin McMillan said that while member satisfaction and loyalty is our most important measure, it is also pleasing to get recognition from the wine industry. 'This award reflects, in its own small way, just how conscientious The Wine Society team is in seeking to understand and meet the wine needs of our members, year in, year out.'

Head of buying Tim Sykes said: 'This is a highly prestigious award, and competition for the National Retailer prize would no doubt have been fierce. Without the unstinting loyalty and enthusiasm of our members the buyers would not be in the fortunate position of being able to scour the world for interesting wines to satisfy their wine-drinking needs.'

The Society was also runner up in the specialist wine retailer category for the Americas and Spain & Portugal.

We are delighted to report three gongs were awarded to The Wine Society by the IWC (International Wine Challenge) 2014.

Such recognition is always a pleasure and we would like to thank the IWC. Above all, however, we would like to thank our members for their continued loyalty and support for their Society. We exist purely for members' benefit and look forward to further enhancing our services in the coming year while continuing to provide the best of the world's vineyards at the best possible prices.

The Association of Portuguese Wine Importers (APWI) seeks to recognise those businesses and individuals who have gone to the greatest lengths to bring wines from Portugal to the forefront of the consumers' mind. In this the tenth anniversary of the awards, The Wine Society received the Online / Mail Order Retailer of the Year award. This is the third time in a row that we have won the award following on from being awarded the gong for overall APWI Merchant of the Year in 2011.

Buyer Joanna Locke MW received the award on behalf of The Society at a dinner hosted by the Portuguese Ambassador at his private residence in London on Wednesday 26th February.

As we are also current holders of the IWC (International Wine Challenge) Specialist Merchant award for Portugal, this represents another excellent endorsement of The Society's range of Portuguese wines.

Joanna Locke says, 'refinement is going hand in hand with growing confidence in Portugal and we are spoilt for choice both at the value and premium level. Our advice to members is to carry on exploring!'
