2019 was overall a cool dry year with smaller berries and yields than normal. The grapes were in perfect health. It is an especially good year for malbec and white wines.
Watch out for two new high-end wines from the excellent producer Susana Balbo, namely Susana Balbo Mandala Collection Gualtallary Malbec 2018 and Susana Balbo Mandala Collecton Barrel-Fermented Paraje Altamira Torrontés 2018.
Our Exhibition Malbec has been selling more than we forecast so we sold out before Christmas, but the excellent 2018 arrived in February. Because it is a special blend made by Catena’s winemaker Alejandro Vigil, we cannot sell more than the original blend we made.
Argentina is well known for malbec but it makes excellent cabernets and cabernet-malbec blends too. I have been busy blending a special 2018 cabernet sauvignon with Catena and a lovely blend of malbec wit cabernets sauvignon and franc blend made with Sebastían Zuccardi, called Las Piletas Corte Especial Valle de Uco 2018. These will appear in the spring or summer.
