Spoilt for choice
Loire lovers and vinous explorers will be spoilt for choice this year. 2017 and 2018 make a dream partnership of go-to vintages, covering the complete spectrum of what this extensive region has to offer. If 2017 was classic (in a good way), with consistent purity of fruit and glorious freshness to the fore, 2018 is by contrast a riper and – for many – friendlier vintage, with super-healthy fruit, richer flavours and less of the acidity which some can struggle with. Rest assured, we will have plenty of both.
Loire reds have come on in leaps and bounds over the last ten years or so. They tend to be lighter than reds from further south in France, and good options for fish and vegetable dishes, not just the classic pairings with charcuterie or steak frîtes. The whites honestly cover all the bases: I would challenge anyone who said they can’t find a Loire white they like! So please do discover, or rediscover them now, while the going is so good.
