Soaring sales and plenty of new discoveries
New Zealand sales continue to grow at The Wine Society, and we continue to discover new sauvignons that offer great intensity, charm and pleasure. In 2018 I visited Marlborough in early July, which enabled me to select wines just before they were bottled. This was very helpful as the end of harvest had once again been dotted with heavy rain. Working with suppliers who own their own vineyards, and therefore have total control at harvest, is becoming hugely important.
Although sauvignon blanc still dominates New Zealand sales, world-class examples of chardonnays and pinot noir are gaining traction. Interestingly this year New Zealand pinot gris also sold well. As vineyards mature and quality improves, I have also had the opportunity to buy some more esoteric Kiwi finds, such as grüner veltliner, albariño, gamay and pinot rosé.
