Alain Brumont’s Magnificent Madirans: The 2020 vintage

Madiran Brumont 2020 - En Primeur

We all need a hero at the moment, and two are even better. Step forward Madiran, surely the most heroic expression of France’s extreme south-west and its greatest champion, Alain Brumont.

Not only did he put this corner of south-west France on the map but saved it from extinction by transforming a tannic and traditionally often rustic proposition into the last word in elegance. His wines are the epitome of the appellation and you’ll certainly want to reserve his brilliant 2020s.

Order by midday on Thursday 21st October for delivery in autumn 2023

Perched right on France’s Atlantic border with Spain, Madiran is about as far as you can go and remain in France. Its star grape, tannat, contains a record number of pips and which, in less skilled hands, would break all-comers’ records for tannin. But it holds no fears for Alain, whose motto – mon terroir, mon cépage (his land, his grape and the very best he can coax from both) inspired his purchase, in 1979, of the plot that what would become Château Montus. The warm clay soils and heat-reflecting pudding stones here are in marked contrast to the more gravelly, clay-limestone terrain of the old 50-hectare family estate, Château Bouscassé, where Alain began his career and both properties, in their unique ways produce flagship Madiran.

Soulmates for the winter-warming cassoulets and duck-based dishes of the region, their elegance makes them a prime choice for beef and venison and they even cope with chocolate.

They are on shining form in 2020, when nature compensated for lockdowns but dishing up perfect conditions. Here we offer a selection of both. All that remains is to choose your hero!
