Bordeaux really can do it all, but as a result it can bewilder even the most seasoned wine lover. There are so many producers, appellations, grapes, soils and vintages, all instrumental in shaping taste, that it can be tricky to know where to start.
As The Society’s Bordeaux buyer, it’s my job to unpick and dispel the myths, and bring members authentic wines that deliver value at any price. That price can be much less than a tenner, as well as considerably more, and there’s delicious drinking at both ends of the spectrum.
Strength in depth is a Bordeaux tradition at The Wine Society, owing much to our historical relationships with many of the châteaux you’ll find in this offer. They make consistently good wine year-in, year-out – and there’s a balance to be struck between highly rated years (like 2018, 2016, 2015, 2010 and 2009) and those that many wine commentators overlooked. Serious producers who work hard in their vineyards make very good wines in less auspicious vintages.
Good, better or best, every wine here can be uncorked with complete confidence, from claret to my pick of the region’s undervalued dry and sweet whites.
