2018 is indeed a gift from nature, with growers all commenting on the ripeness of the grapes. In a comparison with past vintages, Manfred Prüm stuck his neck out, likening 2018 to the great 1959. Praise indeed!
Most of Germany’s agriculture wilted in the heat of 2018 but the vines thrived, and the vintage is a generous one. But for all the hours of sunshine, heat was never dangerously excessive in the vines but there was more than enough to ripen the large crop. The dry wines in particular are simply spectacular, with definition and diamond-edged precision.
The Wine Society has drunk deep of this vintage, concentrating on rieslings but not forgetting other grape varieties. We can only suggest you do the same!
