Flair and value from the region's star winemakers
How do you find the really good wines in a region as vast and wild as the Languedoc? You focus on the people.
The rugged landscape is a Garden of Eden in vineyard terms – almost every grape grows here – but in the 30 years I’ve been buying wine from the Languedoc I’ve learned that great terroir is nothing without even greater people knowing what to do with it. I’ve travelled hundreds of miles throughout this region’s myriad appellations covering a patchwork of Mediterranean vineyards, seeking out the best of the Languedoc’s talented winemakers. The results are right here: stunning wines that are generously flavoured and excellent value.
Englishwoman Katie Jones founded her own Languedoc estate in 2008. Based in the west, Katie has one foot in Fitou and the other over the hills in Roussillon, something which has got her into trouble in the past! She’s a great winemaker as is her husband Jean-Marc. Her coup was acquiring loads of little old-vine plots planted with many grape varieties which are often vinified separately.

Jacques and Françoise Boyer
Home to some of the Languedoc’s most enterprising estates, Côtes de Thongue is not yet an appellation, but is clearly deserving of one thanks to the work done at estates like Domaine de la Croix Belle, where Jacques and Françoise Boyer have been among the pioneers of the rebirth of the Languedoc.
