The chalk soils of Hampshire’s Hambledon Vineyard perfectly suit the Champagne grapes, chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier, so owner Ian Kellet decided to make a wine to rival this famous fizz. Humble enough to know he’d need help from the experts, he also hired top Champagne oenologist Hervé Jestin.
The result, as Jancis Robinson OBE MW described, is a special blend of ‘French Champagne-making expertise plus Hampshire chalk and English determination.’ And in 2015, Jancis was among the esteemed judges who crowned Hambledon the winner at a blind tasting of sparkling wines and Champagnes, beating the likes of Taittinger and Pol Roger.
