Bouzy is undoubtedly one of the best-known (and best named) villages in Champagne. It enjoys a perfect exposition to the south east and is renowned for its gorgeous full-flavoured pinot noirs. Benoît Lahaye is an up-and-coming Bouzy producer, who farms about ten acres, all biodynamically, though he doesn’t declare his estate as such.
It is small enough that he can micro-manage it, intervening as little as possible and, for example, working on a project to make a sulphur-free cuvée.
His Brut Essentiel is 90% pinot noir with a little chardonnay. It is full-flavoured yet fresh and mineral with a twist of red-berry fruit and very good length.
