Château Moulin à Vent, situated within the higher elevations of Moulis, has existed for more than two centuries and has a cellar that was built in 1873.
Dominique and Marie-Hélène Hessel bought the estate in 1977. They both have deep roots in the world of wine: Dominique's family has been involved with Château Les Annereaux (Lalande-de-Pomerol) for five centuries and Marie-Hélène's family first cultivated vines in Algeria before settling at Château d'Arsac.
In the vineyards, successive owners have chosen a sustainable management approach to growing grapes, with controlled yields and a respect of tradition in order to produce wines which express their terroir.
The total vineyard area is currently 22 hectares, with the average age of the vines being 25 years, and with plantings of 73% merlot, 25% cabernet sauvignon and 2% cabernet franc. Manual harvesting is followed by plot by plot vinification in vats with temperature control. Ageing takes place for 12 months in oak barrels, 50% of which are new.
