Bride Valley’s vineyard is a veritable amphitheatre of vines looking out of the village of Litton Cheney not far from Bridport on Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast. This very small operation is owned by world renowned and respected wine writer, educator, journalist and consultant Steven Spurrier and his wife Bella.
Their first vintage, the 2011 released in 2014, was the culmination of many tests of the local geology and much planting of vine on the south and south-west facing slopes, transforming a sheep farm the Spurriers bought in 1987 into a vineyard.
Suitable chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier root stocks had been carefully selected from Burgundy’s famous Pepinieres Guillaume vine nursery and so far 10 hectares has been planted here, and the wines are made by AIan Edwards, the award-winning owner and winemaker of Furleigh Estate, about half-an-hour away from Bride Valley. He is then joined by Steven to decide on blending and for the disgorgement dosage. The result is crisp, elegant sparkling wines of great finesse.
