The Schmitts, winemaker Bernhard and his father Josef, work 3.5 hectares of vines divided between the famous vineyards of Trittenheimer Apotheke, Trittenheimer Altärchen, Neumagener Rosengärtchen and Klüsserather Bruderschaft.
Over the years their forbears had swapped other parcels with fellow growers in order to accumulate this selection of excellent sites, all of them consisting of the weathered blue slate so characteristic of the best vineyards here.
All the vines are worked and harvested by hand which allows a strict selection at picking. Bernhard studied at the innovative oenology faculty at Geisenheim but remains thoroughly traditional in his winemaking. As well as wines they do as many growers do along the Mosel and distil spirits and eaux de vie.
