Babich was founded a century ago by Josip Babich, who migrated to New Zealand from Dalmatia in 1910 at the age of 14 to join his brothers digging for kauri gum on the North Island. Just six years later when still only 20 years of age, Josip founded a wine company and was soon joined by other members of the family.
Today Babich is one of New Zealand's largest family-owned wine companies with vineyards and wineries in Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and at their original home close by Auckland. They grow and vinify numerous grape varieties, from classic Marlborough sauvignon blanc to grüner veltliner and syrah.
The business is currently overseen by brothers Peter and Joe, who began work in the business in 1948 and 1958 respectively, and Peter's son David. Head winemaker Adam Hazeldine worked his way up through the business from cellar hand, which speaks volumes about the values of the family and the company. Today they are one of the best known and most awarded of New Zealand's wine producers.
