Barossa ValleyRobert (Rocky) O’Callaghan’s artisan winery in South Australia’s Barossa Valley has, over the years, built up a dedicated band of followers. Despite increasingly high demand for the very individualistic range of premium wines made here, production volumes remain low. The wines can be incredibly hard to come by, their quality and idiosyncratic character uncompromised by commercial motives. The unique Basket Press Shiraz is a case in point. It is hand-made using traditional techniques which allow oxygen into the process, softening and rounding out the flavours while contributing extra characters to the wine. The cabernet-shiraz blends are beautiful expressions of the classic South Australian style and are more approachable in youth. Whites, including the Rockford Local Growers Semillon, show the precise notes of more delicate varietals.
