Journey's End is owned by the Gabb family and is situated off the Sir Lowry’s Pass Road in the coastal Somerset West area, with vineyards on the Schapenberg hills overlooking False Bay benefiting from the on-and offshore winds.
It is run by Rollo Gabb, founding member of the 15-strong PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa) group. His father, who comes from Shropshire, bought the farm in 1994, and the focus has always been on handcrafted single-vineyard and Estate wines.
They are committed to ethical and sustainable wine production and are accredited with WIETA (The Wine Industry Ethical Trading Association), the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) and IPW (Integrated Production of Wine).
The team produces four varietal wines, and in 2009 this was expanded to include two super-premium wines: a cabernet sauvignon called The Cape Doctor, named after the south-easterly wind that cools and protects the vineyard, and an oak-aged chardonnay called Destination.
Tastings and visits are by appointment, as are cheese platters and snacks, but a BYO picnic is encouraged. Conference facilities are available, as are walking and mountain bike trails and horse riding.
