The Biga di Luberri estate is owned by Florentino Martinez Monje, whose enthusiasm for working in his sustainably farmed vineyards shines though in the quality of his wines. He and his wife Maria José established their winery in 1991 having accumulated plots of vines around Elciego, Laguardia, La Puebla de Labarca and Villabuena de Álava in Rioja Alavesa for several years while Florentino worked as a manager for other growers. Today he and Maria José have been joined by their daughters Laura and Miren.
Their 71 acres of vines, planted on sandy slopes not far from the River Ebro, sit at 400 metres altitude and higher, sweeping up towards the Sierra Cantabria where the soils become poorer and made up of clay and limestone. Farming is sustainable and the grapes are carefully selected in the vineyard during the harvest and then rigorously sorted again at the winery. Fermentation follows using the carbonic maceration method of putting whole, unbroken bunches into the stainless-steel vats for fermentation at 28°C. For Biga di Luberri a ten-day maceration period is followed by a year in French and American oak.
