Records go back to 1135 for this family estate, which has, refreshingly, tended to be passed from mother to daughter. It was once home to a shipbuilding company and was even managed by Georg Ritter von Trapp in the 1920s, who was immortalised in The Sound of Music. The new generation is now at the helm: Josef Maier, who took over from his mother Ilse, along with his wife Maria. They continue to pay homage to the history and importance of biodynamic winemaking at this estate and work the land as sensitively as possible, with the help of their two beautiful shire horses. Their ferments are long and slow, and both the wines in this offer are entirely basket pressed. These are pristine, pure, complex and focused wines, with lovely intricate layers. Remarkable value for the craftsmanship involved.
