If you’re a fan of South African fine wine, you may already know Marc Kent of Boekenhoutskloof and his reputation for top-quality winemaking. A few years ago, Marc fell in love with Portugal’s stunning Douro Valley and was inspired to start a project there with Portuguese winemaker Rita Marques. The result is Invincible, their top red, and it’s a pleasure to offer this concentrated, classy and grand wine to Society members before the rest of the market.
Order by midday Friday 20th September
A field blend from beautiful, very old vines dominated by tinta roriz, the wine has spent 20 months in French oak barriques, 40% new. It is aromatically similar to fine Bordeaux, before decanting opens it up and reveals its unique personality and sense of place, concentration of fruit and delicate spice.
The Douro is a region with a long and rich history of wine production, albeit traditionally fortified. Table wine is a comparatively new thing here, but wines like this demonstrate why this is a region with the potential to become one the most revered in Europe for fine wine.
When I recently visited Marc and Rita on a handover buying trip with former Society buyer Joanna Locke MW, I was frankly blown away by the quality of what they produce and left the visit excited to be able to share these wines with you.
