Koyle AUMA 2020

Don’t miss this rich, structured and complex treasure

Koyle AUMA 2020

AUMA is Koyle's top wine and named after winemaker Cristobal Undurraga's father’s name, Alfonso Undurraga Mackenna. One of Chile's greatest carmenère led blends, the grapes come from just 1.6ha of the very best biodynamic blocks on the 70ha Koyle estate.

Order by midday on Thursday 6th February

The vineyards and wine style
The vineyards are planted on friable, low fertility, basalt soils, on the upper terraces of a hillside at 400-480m altitude, on north- and west-facing slopes and at a high density of 8,000 vines/ha. This is a coolish spot for the very late ripening carmenère, and the climate, planting density and low yields produce a wine which is rich and plummy but not jammy, concentrated but not heavy. It offers aromas of cedar and cloves and a savoury, rather than sweet palate, with a dense structure.

The wine
A wine with a beautiful, velvety texture derived from the carmenère, given structure from the ripe tannins of the cabernet sauvignon. Aromas of black fruit come from the carmenère while the cedary aromas come from the cabernet franc and some floral, violet aromas are contributed by the malbec. It is rich yet structured and will develop considerable complexity with bottle age.

The grape varieties are matured separately for 24 months in 225-litre barrels. After the blend is finalised, the wine is then matured for a further nine months in a concrete egg and bottled without filtration. The wine comprises 52% carmenère, 20% cabernet sauvignon, 11% cabernet franc, 12% malbec, 4% merlot and 1% petit verdot. 8,455 bottles were produced. The Koyle estate is named after a beautiful deep-purple, red-wine-coloured flower found in Chile which is featured on the label.
