Mac Forbes enjoys a cult following among lovers of Australian wines, and is known for producing incredibly focused, fresh and stripped-back wines in the Yarra Valley. His style is the wine equivalent of a Formula One car: aerodynamic, performance-focused and containing absolutely nothing that isn’t essential.
Sometimes, however, you want a plush leather seat and some softer suspension, and this is reflected in his new releases: there is a little more comfort and luxury in these wines, but all without losing sight of his trademark tension and purity. It struck me when tasting that the pendulum has now swung to an almost perfect point, and it did what great wine should do: it inspired me. I selected four of the standouts – a pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and two chardonnays – and am delighted to offer them as a First Release.
