In the second vintage under cellarmaster Wim Truter, the 2022 Estate Red shows all the generosity and rich fruit of 2022, as well as showcasing Wim’s move towards structure, elegance, purity and ageworthiness.
2022 was a good year for much of the Cape, with wines showing approachability in youth but, thanks to Meerlust’s proximity to False Bay, great capacity to age. Wim has created a hugely generous, focused and pure red that bursts from the glass with herbaceous cassis and plum notes from the cabernet and a sweetly supple, rounded palate. It maintains an underlying sense of power, presence and persistence, with a real minerality on the mid-palate – something Wim has been keen to achieve. The tannins are present but never obtrusive, and the finish is long and highly detailed.
