Thanks to our longstanding relationship with Meerlust, we’re given early access each year to their legendary Bordeaux blend, Rubicon, to offer to you ahead of the rest of the UK trade. Now in his second full year in charge of the estate we’re delighted to say that winemaker Wim Truter continues to evolve this much-loved wine, focusing on purity of fruit and ability to age. The 2022 Rubicon is impressive, with all the hallmarks of a wine made to age and we’re excited to offer it to you early. We encourage maturing for another eight to ten years before drinking.

Rubicon is sourced from across Meerlust’s diverse terroirs, including the warm, granite soils of Compagniesdrift, sandy River Terraces, rocky Quarry and clay-rich Lowlands, providing an array of blending options. This year the blend comprises 44% cabernet sauvignon, 40% merlot, 12% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot, with each parcel of each variety fermented separately before transferring to a combination of 300-litre barrels and large foudres. Here the separate parcels spend eight months before blending and a further ten months in barrel.
Higher than average rainfall during the winter months ensured sufficient soil saturation, which was topped up by periods of summer rainfall – an irregular yet welcome occurrence – before a long, dry and hot growing season resulted in a small, high-quality and concentrated harvest.
