Vilafonté have quickly made a name for themselves as a producer of high-quality, uncompromising wines with fabulous capacity to age. The team has pulled off three wonderful wines from the 2022 vintage, and they’re available to reserve now.
Order by midday on Friday, 8th November
Always focused on Bordeaux blends, the founding principle of Vilafonté was to produce two wines to the highest standard from their own densely planted vineyards – Series M and Series C. Series M is a merlot- and malbec-dominated blend providing opulence and spice, with the defining structure of cabernet sauvignon in support. Series C is defined by cabernets sauvignon and franc, and is a densely packed wine with impressive longevity. Together, they’re two of the finest expressions of the Bordeaux blend available in the Cape.
We’re also including Serious Old Dirt, a wine sourced from top sites across the Western Cape. It was brought into the range from 2011 and is now overseen by talented winemaker Arlene Mains. We’re confident in its ageing potential and encourage purchasers to store for another few years before approaching.
2022 was a challenging vintage, characterised by a wet spring that pushed ripening back at least a week with multiple passes through the vineyards during harvest essential to ensure the grapes were picked at optimal ripeness. The result was a greater number of blending components which, alongside Vilafonté’s relentless approach to quality, helped ensure two wonderful ‘grands vins’ and a supercharged Seriously Old Dirt as a result.
For those lucky enough to attend our South Africa tastings in London and Nottingham in September, you’ll know that all three of these wines can be broached in their youth, but we’d highly recommend cellaring for at least another five years for the Vilafonté range for best results.
