2021 was one of the best vintages for South Australia in the past 20 years, alongside the great 2018. According to Yalumba’s Robert Hill-Smith, it was ‘a near perfect vintage, presenting impressive balance, style and fruit characteristics’.
The result is a plush, luxurious, classically styled blend of 53% cabernet sauvignon and 47% shiraz with a sense of silkiness and generosity. The nose shows polished dark fruits, olive tapenade and soft hints of cedar smoke and vanilla pod. The full, cushioned palate offers great depth and a slatey minerality, with layers of plum, cassis and bramble.
Every release of The Signature is dedicated to somebody who has contributed to the success of the winery, their name eternalised on the bottle. Perhaps it is to do with the sense of pride and genuine care that goes into every element of wine, that it stands out as so special. This year’s signatory is Chris Gerhardy, who worked at Yalumba for 50 years, starting on their bottling line. He is the third generation of his family to work for Yalumba and embodies everything about the understated excellence of this business.
