The 2012 Champagne vintage looks set to feature alongside 2008, 2002 and 1990 among the region’s very best in recent years. It is a great vintage, and Alfred Gratien is one of the most highly skilled Champagne houses I know.
Our excitement for Gratien’s 2012 began as soon as Marcel Orford-Williams, our Champagne buyer at the time, tasted the still wines (vins clairs) before secondary fermentation: he was so stunned by the quality that the order was placed on the spot.
The wait is (nearly!) over, and we are thrilled to make the wine available for members to reserve en primeur – in both bottles and magnums.
The wine will be delivered in early 2021
Vintage Champagne is a pleasure. It has been matured by the house so that on release it is already singing, but great vintages like this really come into their own after a couple of years, and this will age comfortably for well over a decade yet.
The 2012 vintage produced very small yields due in part to poor weather in spring affecting the flowering and fruit set. However, herein lies the quality, as the lower natural yields benefited from a stunning warm summer that ripening the small crop perfectly. Harvest was in mid September, which remained dry. This vintage is reminiscent of exceptional 2008, or the 1996 and the chardonnay grape (which forms 61% of the 2012 blend) was the star: a perfect crop. Combined with pinot noir (25%) and pinot meunier (14%), this classic blend manages to convey both the style of the vintage and the grower in delicious harmony.
In short, it’s unmissable, and I hope you enjoy drinking it over the years to come.
