Vergelegen 'The Mistake' Merlot, Stellenbosch 2014

The happy result of a misunderstanding in year one of the exciting partnership between long-term cellarmaster André van Rensburg and renowned consultant Michel Rolland, whose first vintage on the ground at Vergelegen was 2014. Around 300 cases of this merlot were produced when closer to 3,000 were budgeted for. The wine, not unsurprisingly given these elements alone, is exceptional. From three of Vergelegen's immaculate vineyard blocks, it is deep in colour, dark in its fruit profile, with cedar, graphite and spice aromas, and rich and long on the palate. 2019 to 2030.

Vergelegen 'First Thought' Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2014

Just four barrels of this cabernet sauvignon were made from the Stone Pine vineyard which is the source of much of Vergelegen's best cabernet, usually at the heart of the Vergelegen ‘V’ wine. A powerful yet elegant red, with notes of cedar and tobacco, very fine grainy tannins, and great length and structure on the palate. 2019 to 2034.

Vergelegen 'The Last Word' Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2014

This is vinified and matured exactly as the First Thought Cabernet, thus showcasing the differences between these two single-vineyard sites on the farm. Here the cabernet offers more integrated, classical aromas of lead pencil and cedar, with black cherry and 'fynbos' spice, yet more muscular structure and grainy tannins. 2019 to 2035.
