2020 Rhone for laying down
Wines included
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel 2020
Another fine vintage for Beaucastel which Marc Perrin compares with 1990 and 2010, or as I tend to think, a bit of both. There is weight and ripeness but also freshness.
Crozes-Hermitage Les Picaudières, Domaine Rousset 2020
This comes from the granite slopes behind Hermitage and always makes a more serious style of Crozes with more character and a more tannic structure. Very dark, ripe and concentrated.
Gigondas, Tradition Moulin de la Gardette 2020
A full-flavoured, fabulously rich Gigondas from the great 2020 vintage. Full of tangy, figgy fruit. Try it with lamb tagine.
Saint-Joseph Poivre et Sol, Domaine Villard 2020
Deeply coloured syrah from the northern end of the sprawling northern Rhône appellation of Saint-Joseph, with masses of richly flavoured, concentrated, dark and spicy fruit.
Vacqueyras Variation, Domaine de Montvac 2020
Made from 100% old vines of grenache from a specific plot, this is a full-flavoured and spicy Rhône, perfect for wintery stews. The 2020 has depth, balance and concentration.
Valreas, Les Echalats, Clos Bellane 2020
This is an exceptionally good 2020 southern Rhône red made from syrah trained on stakes or 'echalats'. This is dark, full and savoury and from a very fine estate planted at altitude..
