This winemaking project was launched in 2005 by the Sanz siblings – who have five generations of winemaking behind them, dating back to 1860.
While his brother Marco manages the vineyards and sister Alejandra oversees export and communications, the innovative Ricardo Sanz is in charge of winemaking, using the experience he gained working in Hungary, France and Chile. He works with The Society’s buyer for Spain, Pierre Mansour, to create a 100% verdejo called Finca Lallana (previously named Las Olas), which is exclusive to The Society.
Rueda, Spain’s most famous white wine region, is in the northwest of the country not far from the Portuguese border. Ricardo and his siblings have 160 hectares of organically farmed vines here – mostly verdejo with small amounts of sauvignon blanc, viura and tinta de toro – which are planted between the Duero and Zapardiel rivers on sandy clay soils.
The vineyards are at an altitude of 700 metres which offsets the intense heat that this inland region sees during summer time. As a result, Ricardo’s wines retain more natural acidity and freshness, which we think makes them especially appealing.
Grapes are hand picked before being transferred to temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. We choose to keep Finca Lallana unoaked so as not to mask the delicious fruity flavour of verdejo.
