Travels in Alsace Whites Case
Wines included
The Society's Vin d'Alsace 2022
Rather than being made from a single grape variety, this is a blend that varies a little by vintage, so that no one flavour dominates. A little fuller bodied than the 2021 but typically dry and fresh on the palate. Produced for us by the Hugel family, this wine occupies the pivotal spot in our Alsace selection and has introduced the region to generations of members.
The Wine Society's Generation Series Gentil, Alsace 2021
The Wine Society has worked with several generations of the Hugel family and it felt entirely natural that we should turn to this famous family for a wine from their home region to celebrate our 150th birthday. A refined blend of Alsace noble grape varieties with the freshness of the 2021 vintage: restrained on the nose, more complex and layered on the palate, with gentle texture underpinned by a backbone of minerality, and fine length. For more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.
Pinot Blanc Midelberg, Boeckel 2022
Pinot blanc can be made from the auxerrois grape, as per appellation rules in Alsace, and this is 100% auxerrois, certified organic. It has fresh, bright fruit on the nose followed by the creamier texture typical of the grape variety.
Muscat, Domaine Frédéric Mochel 2022
Intense and seductive young Alsace muscat with touches of exotic fruits on the nose, underpinned by great purity and length. Enjoy it with asparagus in a buttery hollandaise sauce.
Sylvaner Réserve, Joseph Cattin 2022
Aromatic young Alsace sylvaner from older vines which bring a certain freshness and cut, along with ripeness. Lovely with salads, especially if featuring ham. Jacques Cattin Jr runs the business together with his wife Anaïs, with his father Jacques Sr never far away, and the family history in the region dates back to 1720.
Pinot Gris, Cave de Turckheim 2022
The Cave de Turckheim in Alsace is one of a handful of co-operatives in France that offer great value for money. This is their entry-level pinot gris that is accessible and easy to drink. Expect red apples, stone fruits and citrus with subtle floral hints.
