Anselmo Mendes
Anselmo Mendes was born in Monção, an area in the vinho verde region in north Portugal best known for the alvarinho grape, known elsewhere as albariño. He began his fascination with alvarinho from an early age, going on to achieve worldwide acclaim for his work with the variety, and is recognised as one of Portugal’s finest white wine producers.
After gaining his oenology degree and working for a while in various capacities in the Portuguese wine industry, he began making wine under his own name in 1998. He now makes wine from three grapes in three distinct vinho verde regions: alvarinho in the Minho Valley, loureiro in the Lima Valley and avesso in the Douro valley.
His considers his winery in Minho valley as a place of experimentation, where he uses traditional methods – such as allowing skin contact with the juice during fermentation – alongside more innovative techniques. Some of his alvarinho is also carefully fermented and aged in French oak.
His new red vinho verde, Pardusco, uses traditional grapes to create a more modern style more akin to Beaujolais than the typical deep-coloured, high acid reds of the region.

… has scents of lemons, limes and pears. This is bone dry and racy. 'Contacto' indicates some texture-giving skin contact time to the citrus, grapefruit and mineral notes.
