Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal
One of Portugal’s biggest wine groups, Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal is also one of the most forward thinking. With a presence in seven of Portugal’s wine regions (Alentejo, Península de Setúbal (Azeitão), Lisbon, Bairrada, Dão and Douro) and owning 1,200 hectares of vines they have three wineries where the most modern equipment and knowhow is used to produce a splendid range of wines from more than 40 different grape varieties.
There is near century long history here, with the roots of the company established in 1922, but since 1998 they have benefited particularly from the expertise and investment of main shareholder José Berardo, a noted financier. He has overseen an expansion of their capabilities and their portfolio, particularly with the purchase of a majority share in another major Portuguese group, Aliança Vinhos.
Despite their size this is not solely a big-production player, with several single estates among their properties, a team of excellent winemakers and viticulturalists and a consequent reputation for making modern, appealing wines that reflect their provenance and reflect the strides made in Portuguese winemaking.
