If you fancy trying something a little different ... made from tinta negra mole grapes (80%) with the balance of verdelho. This is a relatively rare and much lighter, smoother (easier-drinking) style of Madeira; nutty, with some hints of maple syrup but also lifts of neroli. I’ve drunk this medium-dry style with 5pm snacks of Manchego and jamón, but also with creamy mushrooms on toast (particularly good if there’s a bit of Madeira in the mushroom sauce); as well as at the end of a dinner with homemade almond biscuits or truffles.

But as this example shows, the best are also fruitcake-rich and simultaneously refreshing – so perfect all year round.

Sweeties are noteveryone’s cup of tea but this will do triple if not quadruple duty as aMother’s Day gift, an Easter egg alternative OR something to wash your Easteregg down with. Also great if you’re putting on a bit of a spread to go with aplatter of cheeses and nibbles. Rainwater Madeira is a less common style ofMadeira and tends to be lighter and fresher than others. It is still sweet butwith a lovely crisp finish, combining a nutty, fruitcake flavour with a candiedlemon zing.  The packaging is modern and fresh too making it a lovelygift.
