Matilde Poggi makes the best Bardolino we know and with a light touch. It is fragrant and refreshing with a herbal, pencil-shaving perfume with roses and red berries on the palate. This is an Italian red that could be chilled a little and is perfect with mixed antipasti or a picnic.

Le Fraghe

Matilde Poggi runs this 28-hectare estate in the Adige valley next to Lake Garda and close to Verona, using only estate grapes (70% corvina and 30% rondinella, both local varieties). Her father, a successful industrialist bought the estate in the early eighties and Mathilde began making the wine in 1984.

She gets it right in the vineyards and then takes care of the fruit in the cellars, employing cool maceration and a short four-day fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel to preserve maximum fruit and freshness.
